Ask for the final engine and transmission details, serial numbers, manuals and invoices.

01

Collect the installation record

Ask for the final engine and transmission details, serial numbers, manuals and invoices. Record the commissioning work and any agreed sea-trial findings. Keep the original proposal and approved changes together. The completed installation may differ from the first quote, and the boat’s records should reflect the final arrangement.

02

Learn the supplied controls

Arrange a practical handover using the exact equipment fitted. Ask the installer to explain normal operation, alarms and the relevant manufacturer instructions. Confirm where service information is recorded and who to contact if a symptom appears. An owner demonstration is distinct from a technician’s commissioning process; ask for both to be identified.

03

Close out outstanding items

Make a written list of any remaining work, the responsible party and the agreed follow-up. Confirm warranty and service arrangements directly with the supplier. For a newly installed package, clarify which early inspections or services the manufacturer requires. Do not treat delivery of documents alone as proof that every agreed test or task was completed.

04

Example: the invoice is not the complete handover

A completed invoice may identify the engine supplied without describing the settings, retained components or checks made during commissioning. Ask for a handover pack that connects the engine model and serial details to the actual installation and scope of work. Confirm which documents are manufacturer manuals and which records describe work performed on your boat.

05

Close the loop on outstanding items

Keep a dated list of any unfinished work or questions, with the responsible contact and agreed next step. Ask the installer to explain warranty registration, service requirements and how faults should be reported. Do not substitute a generic online checklist for the engineer’s commissioning process or the exact manufacturer instructions.
