A motor cruiser combines propulsion, helm systems and the everyday needs of time aboard. Start with the intended trips and the crew, then work through what the boat already has. A weekend berth-to-berth programme and a longer coastal cruise can lead to different purchasing priorities without changing the name on the hull.
Record the engine, transmission or drive model and the available service history. Ask a marine engineer to assess condition and access before deciding whether to repair, upgrade or replace. Include removal routes and retained systems in any major scope. Engine price alone is not a useful comparison with a commissioned propulsion installation.
Map who steers and who navigates. If the boat has multiple stations, ask which information and controls are available at each one, and which dependencies they share. Choose chart coverage, display controls and communications around actual use. Two displays do not automatically provide independent navigation if both rely on the same sources or power arrangement.
List the equipment the crew expects to use and have a qualified specialist assess the electrical arrangement. A generator proposal needs an agreed load brief, installation scope, ventilation and service access review. This directory does not size generators or prescribe wiring. Compare complete proposals that explain the engineering work and the handover.
Ask where routine maintenance, warranty assessment and important spares are handled. Keep serial numbers and records accessible to the crew. Before departure, resolve unfinished commissioning tasks and learn the installed systems. Comfort upgrades should sit alongside, rather than obscure, the practical work required to keep equipment maintainable and supported.

Some electronics, communications and service-planning questions overlap. Propulsion, installation and product suitability must still be assessed for the actual motor boat.
