Building a sail inventory for a small crew

Give each sail a clear role and discuss handling before adding another bag.

An inventory should match the crew that normally sails the boat.

01

Describe the crew’s routine

An inventory should match the crew that normally sails the boat. List existing sails, where each is stored and the conditions in which you use it. Note awkward hoists, changes or stowage. This tells a sailmaker more than a request for the largest possible collection.

02

Identify an actual gap

Ask which situations the existing inventory handles poorly and why. A repair, alteration or change to handling equipment may deserve consideration alongside a new sail. Discuss the complete package for any addition: attachment points, sheets, furling equipment where relevant and storage. Confirm installation suitability with the appropriate specialist.

03

Test the proposal against a trip

For a couple planning coastal weekends, an easily managed sail may be more useful than a specialist racing option. Walk through preparation, deployment and putting it away with the loft. Ask for model-specific operating guidance and familiarisation. A clear role for every sail makes the inventory easier to use and maintain.

04

Example: reduce uncertainty during sail changes

If the same two people handle most trips, describe the tasks that currently interrupt steering, lookout or sail handling. Bring that account to the loft alongside the existing inventory. The useful discussion is how each sail will be set, adjusted, reduced and stowed by that crew, rather than simply adding another sail for a theoretical gap.

05

Evaluate the whole handling arrangement

Ask whether a proposal depends on furling gear, attachment changes, additional lines or different deck hardware. Include storage and recovery in the brief, not only performance while sailing. Confirm which conditions the loft intends each sail to cover and arrange familiarisation with a suitably experienced person before relying on a changed setup.
