Comparing sailmaker quotes fairly

Look beyond cloth names to measurements, construction, hardware and aftercare.

Comparable quotes begin with the same sailing programme.

01

Send the same brief

Comparable quotes begin with the same sailing programme. Tell each loft about your boat, crew, current handling system and the job the new sail must do. Separate required improvements from desirable extras. Ask the loft to state whether its price follows measurement or depends on information you have supplied.

02

Compare the supplied sail

Record the proposed construction, reef arrangements, battens, attachment hardware, protection and fitting work. A construction name alone does not describe the complete sail. Ask the designer to explain the practical trade-offs for your programme. Keep the explanation with the quote so a later revision can be assessed against the same priorities.

03

Include the first sail

If one proposal includes fitting and a follow-up adjustment while another ends at delivery, show that difference explicitly. Ask how the loft handles a problem noticed on first use and what aftercare is available locally. Choose based on the agreed outcome and support, not a prediction of identical performance from differently specified sails.

04

Example: two mainsail quotes with different scope

One loft may include measuring aboard, sail numbers, battens and a fitting visit; another may describe a sail delivered to the loft. Ask each to identify those items explicitly, together with reef arrangements, attachment details and the intended handling system. Do not infer inclusions from a photograph of a similar sail on another boat.

05

Record the reasoning behind the recommendation

Ask why the proposed construction and finishing suit your actual programme. Keep the explanation with the quote so you can compare priorities such as handling, durability, performance and service arrangements. Before ordering, confirm who signs off measurements and how changes to the brief affect price or delivery.
