Replacing a headsail: the questions to ask

Prepare a headsail brief that covers the furler, deck layout and the way you sail.

Treat the headsail, furling gear and sheet leads as a connected system.

01

Record the existing arrangement

Photograph the headsail attachment, furling equipment and sheet leads, and note the boat and rig details. Explain whether you are replacing a damaged sail, improving handling or changing the sail’s intended role. Ask the loft to inspect and measure the relevant equipment. A familiar sail name does not describe every dimension or attachment needed for a replacement.

02

Talk through the working range

Tell the sailmaker where you cruise and how often you sail with a small crew. Ask how the proposed sail is intended to be used and what compromises come with its size and construction. Discuss the existing inventory so the new headsail has a defined job. Avoid comparing options only by area or a material trade name without understanding the intended use.

03

Include protection and ongoing care

Ask what protection is specified for a furled sail and how the loft recommends storing and inspecting it. Include any required changes to sheets or hardware in the project brief. Doyle’s sail-care material emphasises inspection and protection from unnecessary exposure; the details should be confirmed for the chosen construction. Keep a record of the supplied dimensions and fittings for future service enquiries.
