A beacon inventory should connect the physical device with its current registration and service record.

01

Identify every beacon aboard

Record each beacon’s model and identifying details from its label and documentation. Distinguish equipment associated with the vessel from personal equipment carried by crew. Store the operating instructions where they can be found easily. AMSA’s beacon service is the official Australian starting point for registration information; use that service to confirm the requirements for the device.

02

Review changes in ownership and use

When buying a boat or a used device, check the registration status through the official process rather than assuming the previous owner’s records are sufficient. Review contact and vessel information when circumstances change. Keep confirmation with the equipment record. A receipt establishes a purchase, but it does not by itself confirm that registration details are current.

03

Track service information separately

Record battery and other service dates shown in the model’s documentation, and ask the manufacturer or approved service provider about required work. Follow only the prescribed self-test method. If a test result or physical condition raises concern, obtain support before relying on the device. Keep registration, servicing and familiarisation as separate checklist items so one completed task does not hide another that remains outstanding.
