A useful shortlist must account for the wearer, activity and applicable requirements.

01

Begin with the wearer and activity

Tell the supplier who will wear the lifejacket, the type of sailing and the conditions in which it is intended to be used. Check the relevant Australian requirements for your vessel and waters. Try the exact model and size with the clothing normally worn aboard. A product family name does not establish that every version suits every person or activity.

02

Understand the supplied features

Ask the supplier to explain the inflation arrangement, adjustment, any integrated harness and the accessories included in the selected version. If a beacon is to be fitted, confirm compatibility and the approved fitting method for both products. Spinlock’s Deckvest range illustrates how fit, accessories and support belong in the same conversation. Do not assume an accessory shown in a photograph is included.

03

Plan ownership as well as purchase

Obtain the user instructions and confirm inspection and servicing requirements, replacement parts and local support. Ask for a fitting demonstration and arrange familiarisation for each wearer. Record the model and relevant service information with the boat’s safety inventory. This comparison guide supports the buying conversation; the model instructions and applicable local requirements govern use and maintenance.
