EPIRB, PLB and AIS: understanding the roles

Separate vessel beacons, personal beacons and local locating functions before comparing products.

These terms describe different roles and signalling functions; do not treat them as substitutes.

01

Start with the role

An EPIRB is associated with maritime distress, while a PLB is intended for personal carriage. AIS distress-location functions are another part of the equipment landscape, and some products combine technologies. AMSA’s beacon information is the authoritative Australian starting point for understanding the distinctions. Ask which exact functions a proposed model provides rather than relying on the word beacon alone.

02

Match the model to the requirement

Confirm the vessel’s applicable requirements with the relevant authority and check the product’s Australian-market suitability. A personal device does not automatically replace required vessel equipment. Ask the supplier to explain registration, mounting or carriage, battery service and the operating instructions for the selected model. GME and Ocean Signal offer examples across different beacon types.

03

Plan how the crew will find it

Discuss accessible carriage and familiarisation using the manufacturer’s instructions. Keep a record of the model, registration details and service dates. Do not activate a distress device for a demonstration; use only its prescribed test procedure. Product comparison is just one part of preparation, alongside knowing where equipment is and how the crew should use it in an actual emergency.
