List the safety equipment physically aboard and identify exact models.

01

Start with the actual boat

List the safety equipment physically aboard and identify exact models. Separate vessel equipment from personal items brought by crew. Check the relevant authority’s current requirements for the boat, waters and activity. A checklist copied from another state or another vessel is not a complete assessment of your obligations.

02

Connect items to their records

For each item, keep the operating instructions, relevant registration and servicing details, and the next required action. Ask the manufacturer or an appropriate service provider about uncertain condition or dates. A tick beside an equipment name should not hide an overdue service or a missing component.

03

Brief the people who use it

Make sure the crew knows where equipment is kept and arrange appropriate familiarisation using its instructions. Record missing or unserviceable items and resolve them before relying on the equipment. Review the inventory when the crew, boat or intended waters change. Use this as a record-keeping framework alongside current official requirements, not as a legal carriage list.

04

Example: separate presence from readiness

Finding an item in a locker establishes that it is present, but does not answer questions about its suitability, condition, registration or service status. Use separate columns for those matters and record the exact model. Check the current authority guidance and manufacturer instructions for each relevant item rather than treating a previous owner’s list as a complete assessment.

05

Assign follow-up actions

Where a date, record or status is unclear, write down who will resolve it and the official source or service provider to consult. Keep device registration, professional servicing and crew familiarisation as separate tasks. Complete the appropriate checks for the planned activity before relying on equipment; this inventory is a planning aid, not a compliance certificate.
