What to record when a rope shows wear

Give a rigger useful evidence without assuming every worn line needs the same solution.

Note the line’s function and exactly where the affected section sits during use.

01

Record where wear appears

Note the line’s function and exactly where the affected section sits during use. Photograph the complete route and the local area if accessible. Describe whether the symptom is visible damage, slipping or changed handling. Keep the observation separate from the cause: a worn rope can be a symptom of a hardware or lead problem.

02

Assess the whole path

Ask a rigger or supplier to review the rope and connected hardware together. The discussion should cover the construction, diameter, attachments and expected duty. Do not rely on a colour change or photograph alone to decide whether a loaded line is safe to continue using. Follow appropriate professional and manufacturer guidance.

03

Avoid repeating the fault

For example, replacing a halyard without investigating wear near a clutch may leave the original problem in place. Ask what was found and whether the new line requires any hardware changes. Record the supplied specification, installation date and inspection advice so the next assessment has useful history.

04

Example: a replacement line shows wear again

If a line repeatedly wears at the same location, include photographs of that area and the associated hardware in the enquiry. Tell the specialist when the wear became apparent and which operation places the line there. Replacing the rope without reviewing the route may leave the underlying cause unresolved; ask for the system to be assessed.

05

Keep assessment and specification together

A remote photograph cannot establish every aspect of a line’s condition or remaining capability. Have the appropriate specialist assess the actual equipment when suitability is uncertain. The replacement proposal should identify the rope specification and any recommended hardware, routing or termination work, with the reasons for those changes explained.
