Planning an autopilot upgrade

Prepare a supplier brief that includes the steering system, drive and control locations.

An autopilot proposal needs to fit the boat’s steering system, not just its dashboard.

01

Describe the boat before the controls

Begin with the boat model, displacement information, steering arrangement and any existing pilot equipment. Photographs of the drive and its mounting area are more useful than a photograph of the control head alone. Ask the supplier to assess the complete installation and explain which components are suitable to retain. Avoid choosing a drive from screen size or boat length alone.

02

Decide how you want to control it

Identify where the helmsperson should be able to engage, adjust and disengage the pilot. Ask which modes the proposed installation supports and what data each mode requires. A display that can show autopilot controls does not by itself establish compatibility with every drive or pilot computer. Raymarine documents network requirements for its Evolution integration; other combinations need their own model-specific confirmation.

03

Make commissioning part of the purchase

The installation quote should say who checks the steering interface, configures the system and completes the prescribed commissioning. Ask for an on-water handover, including how to regain manual control and recognise alarms. Keep the operating instructions with the boat. An autopilot assists steering; the crew still needs an active lookout and responsibility for navigation.
