Do you need a second instrument display?

Compare another viewing position with a better layout on the screen you already have.

An extra display should solve a defined viewing problem.

01

Find the visibility problem

An extra display should solve a defined viewing problem. Ask the helmsperson and crew which information they cannot read from their working positions. Try a simpler page layout before ordering equipment. A large number in the right place can be more useful than another small screen showing everything.

02

Check the installation cost

Measure the available mounting area, cable route and service access. Ask whether the proposed repeater receives all required data from the existing system and how settings are controlled. Include mounting, interfaces and configuration in the comparison. A screen price alone leaves much of the project undecided.

03

Use a crew scenario

For a small racing crew, a mast display may support a different job from the helm plotter. For a cruising couple, a readable companionway instrument may be more useful. Demonstrate the proposed data fields from the actual working distances, and ask who will set up the final pages. Preserve clear access around the companionway and controls.

04

Example: the crew needs a different view

A helmsman may be comfortable with the main display while a trimmer cannot see the information needed from the working position. Photograph those positions and explain the task at each. A second screen can be useful when it solves a specific viewing problem; repeating the same layout everywhere may add clutter without improving the crew’s understanding.

05

Ask for a layout demonstration

Have the supplier show the proposed page layout and how the crew changes pages or brightness. Confirm what happens when other displays are switched off, whether the new unit depends on a separate processor and which controls remain available. Include brackets, cabling and any modifications to the mounting surface in the quote.
