A backup plan starts with a list of information you would miss.

01

Decide what must be retained

A backup plan starts with a list of information you would miss. Routes, waypoints and system settings may have different export methods. Find the exact model manual and identify which items it supports. Do not assume that syncing a phone application preserves the entire onboard configuration.

02

Keep identifiable copies

Use clear file names and record the device model and date alongside the export. Keep a separate record of important configuration details where supported. Store a copy away from the boat. Ask an installer for help with format compatibility before importing material into a replacement display; different systems can interpret available data differently.

03

Verify the recovery path

Before removing an old plotter, confirm that the saved files can be located and that the proposed replacement supports the intended transfer. Review imported routes and waypoints on the target device rather than treating a successful file copy as validation. Follow the manufacturer’s process and retain the original export until the migration has been checked.

04

Example: prepare before a service visit

If a display is going away for repair, ask the service provider what information may be lost and what export formats the exact model supports. List saved routes, waypoints and settings separately because they may require different procedures. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and verify the files are present in the intended storage location before handing over equipment.

05

Check restoration rather than assuming it

Keep the device model and software version with the backup record. Before relying on an imported route, review it on the receiving device against the current chart and intended journey. A transferred file does not establish that every setting, datum or route detail has been carried across in the way you expect.
